Two friends at real speed, about four words a second. The words turning grey are the ones learners usually miss.

Written vs. spoken

On the left, how Swedish is written. In red, how people actually say it. Real conversation is full of these, and textbooks rarely teach them. Kuulo writes the spoken form above every word of every clip, so your ear knows what's coming.

Press Start and Kuulo takes you through five parts, all from the podcast you chose. The same clip stays for two days: the second time, you hear more.

  1. A clip's text with spoken forms above the words and missed words marked red.
  2. Kuulo listening while you say a sound bit back.
  3. The answer timer at 0.4 seconds, with rescue phrases like “Förlåt, vad sa du?”.
  4. A card asking you to say “I picked up my son from preschool” in Swedish.
  5. Today's story, “Min son”, with cues to help you start.

Questions

What level do I need?
Some basic Swedish, around A2. Kuulo is for the gap between textbook Swedish and real conversation. Start with easy news like Klartext and move up to people talking freely.
Do I have to talk out loud?
Yes, that is half of it. You say back what you heard and answer questions out loud. Kuulo turns your voice into text to check you. Your recordings stay in your account, and you can delete them any time.
Which podcasts can I use?
Any podcast with a public link: Apple Podcasts, Sveriges Radio, and Spotify shows that are also on Apple. Search inside Kuulo, or start with one of the shows it suggests.
Is there an app to download?
Kuulo runs in the browser. On iPhone, open kuulo.app in Safari and choose Add to Home Screen; on Android, choose Install app. Today's clips are saved on the phone, so it works on the subway.
Who can see my progress and voice?
Only you. No ads and no tracking. You can download everything Kuulo keeps about you, or delete your account and all of it, from the Account page.
Is it only for Swedish?
Swedish first. Kuulo is built so other languages can follow. Tell us which one you want with the Feedback button inside the app.

Förlåt, vadva sa du?

“Sorry, what did you say?” You'll ask it less.
